What was happening at the beginning of Akira?
In 2019, following a world war triggered by the sudden destruction of Tokyo on July 16, 1988, Neo-Tokyo is plagued by corruption, anti-government protests, terrorism, and gang violence. During a violent rally, the hot-headed Shōtarō Kaneda leads his vigilante bōsōzoku gang, the Capsules, against the rival Clown gang.
The origin of that explosion is the namesake Akira, a psychic child (also called an ESPer) who ascended to the level of a God and whose power kickstarted a singularity that destroyed the world and created a new one.

Tokyo is destroyed by Akira on the 6th of December 1992, in retaliation to Nezu accidentally shooting Takashi through the head.

Ryo Asuka is a genderless angel who is Akira Fudo's best friend, while Akira is the protagonist. Akira was the first person to show him kindness, causing him to become deeply attached.

His powers grow so powerful and intense that it threatens the entire universe.
He undergoes a total metamorphosis, completing his evolutionary destiny. By recognizing that he is a supreme being with mortal qualities, he comes to accept himself thus his statement, that he's neither the experiment known as #41, nor is he the resentful boy, he is and has always been, Tetsuo.
Type of Villain
While Akira was a heroic character in the film, in the manga, he plays a villainous role, and becomes the puppet ruler of the Great Tokyo Empire, as well as the accomplice of Tetsuo Shima.
The two forces collide, and the Devilmen are wiped out. In the midst of the confrontation, Akira and Satan fight each other, but Satan unknowingly kills Akira by bisecting him with his attacks. As Satan reflects on the events, then comes to realise what he has done, God's angels descend upon the Earth.
