The basic units of the Japanese writing system are syllables. Standard Japanese uses 100 distinct syllables.
The general method of counting in Japanese poetry is by a rhythmic unit known as the mora (morae or moras in plural). A mora is (essentially) the length of a single (full-sized) kana; so is a bit different from a syllable. For instance: A long vowel is counted as one syllable, but two moras.
Japanese has long and short morae, but not stressed ones. The familiar word “teriyaki,” a cooking technique where meat is marinated, is pronounced differently in English than in Japanese, and much of the difference is in the stress.

Korean syllables are organized into blocks of letters that have a beginning consonant, a middle vowel, and an optional final consonant. A syllable block is composed of a minimum of two letters, consisting of at least one consonant and one vowel.
